MIAMI VS. FLORIDA STATE — The three games with Florida State in Coral Gables will mark game No. 226-228 between UM and FSU since the 1951 season. FSU holds the lead over Miami, 117-105-3 in the series, but the Hurricanes lead 57-47-2 at Miami.
The Miami/FSU series is the second-oldest on-going rivalry on the Hurricanes schedule behind the Florida series (1940), but UM and FSU have played the most games (225).
UM head coach Jim Morris was the first assistant hired by FSU head coach Mike Martin in 1980. Morris served on the FSU staff for the 1980-81 seasons, with current FSU pitching coach Jamey Shoupe as a Seminoles pitcher. FSU assistant coach Chip Baker also served on Morris’ Georgia Tech staff. UM pitching coach Lazaro Collazo served one season, 1992, on the FSU staff.
Miami/FSU Series Notes –
Miami is 33-23 overall vs. FSU during the Jim Morris era, including a 15-9 mark at Mark Light Stadium. Additionally, UM is 16-14 vs. FSU at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, as well as 2-0 vs. FSU at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, NE.Miami is 27-22-2 vs. FSU in three-game series, including a 14-9-1 mark at Mark Light Stadium. Additionally, UM is 13-13-1 in three-game series at Dick Howser Stadium. There have been 11 sweeps during this span with UM holding a 7-4 edge.In the 18 three-game series between UM and FSU played during the Jim Morris era, the Hurricanes lead 10-8.There have been only four three-game series sweeps during the Jim Morris era, UM leads 3-1.
LAST WEEKEND IN TALLAHASSEE —
Senior Javy Rodriguez jumped past Doug Shields to No. 2 all-time in career hits with No. 271 and 272 in the game one (13-3) loss to FSU.Freshman Danny Figueroa went 4-for-4 in the game two win (5-2) over FSU. He doubled and had two RBI and one run scored. It was the fifth four-hit game by a Hurricane this season and the first time a Miami player has went perfect in hitting with more than two hits recorded all season.Sophomore Dan Touchet moved to 3-1 on the season with his 7.2 inning performance in game two. The outing was the longest by a UM starter this season. He also had six strikeouts, one off his career-best.Senior Brad Safchik hit a second inning grand slam to put UM in the hunt for a game three win, but the first extra-inning game of the season for Miami resulted in a 9-7 loss. FSU freshman Stephen Drew hit a walk-off three-run shot in the 13th to seal the series win for the Seminoles. The 12 Miami hits tied for the season-high in a UM loss.
VS. THE ACC UNDER MORRIS — Since Jim Morris’ first season with the Hurricanes in 1994, Miami has forged a 67-35 record against Atlantic Coast Conference schools. Subtract the annual six-game series with the Seminoles and UM is 34-12 against the ACC.
JAVY RODRIGUEZ LISTED THROUGHOUT MIAMI CAREER RECORDS — Senior All-American Javy Rodriguez has etched his name on numerous Miami career record lists, including at bats, runs scored, hits, total bases, total sacrifices and stolen bases.
KEVIN HOWARD’S FOUR DOUBLES VS. ELON MOVES INTO FOURTH PLACE — Kevin Howard’s one double during the FSU series in Tallahassee allowed him to move into a third-place tie with 55 career doubles. He is now tied with Don Rowland (82-85). Jose Trujillo (1986-89) holds the school-record with 65 doubles. Howard has 12 doubles in 2002, 20 in 2001 and 22 in 2000. Howard also has 216 career hits – eight away from tying Calvin James (81-85) for 10th place.
GEORGE HUGUET IN A FIFTH-PLACE TIE FOR CAREER SAVES — Sophomore George Huguet earned one save last weekend at Florida State to give him 20 for his career. The 20 career saves tie for fifth-place all-time at Miami with 1982 College World Series MVP Danny Smith (80-83). Rick Raether (84-86) holds the school-record with 37 career saves. Jay Tessmer (94-95) is in fourth-place with 23 saves.
DANNY MATIENZO’S LAST AT BAT VS. UCLA SENDS HIM INTO THE RECORD BOOKS — Danny Matienzo’s last at bat in game No. 3 vs. UCLA resulted in a solo home run to right center. The home run was the 32nd of his career, tying him for 10th place with Darren Mandel (1983-84) and Danny Buxbaum (1994-95). Additionally, Matienzo has 152 career RBI, two away from tying Jason Michaels for 10th place.
VINCE VAZQUEZ, JIM BURT NAMED 2002 TEAM CAPTAINS — In a vote consisting of the baseball coaches, players and staff, junior pitcher Vince Vazquez and sophomore outfielder Jim Burt were named the 2002 team captains. It is the second straight year Vazquez was voted to be a team captain, along with Greg Lovelady, in 2001.
DANNY MATIENZO NAMED TO HOMESTEAD CHALLENGE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM — Junior catcher Danny Matienzo was named to the 2002 Homestead Challenge All-Tournament Team. Matienzo batted .600 over five games played against Homestead Challenge opponents (FIU, Kansas State, Lipscomb, Ball State and Wisconsin-Milwaukee). While going 12-for-20, he also had seven runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, six RBI, three walks, two stolen bases and four runners caught stealing.
The 2002 season marked the fifth straight year Miami participated in the Homestead Challenge posting a 14-2 all-time record dating back to 1998. The Hurricanes have also had four players on Homestead Challenge All-Tournament teams, including Matienzo, 2002, Kiki Bengochea in 2001, Kevin Howard in 2000 and Daryl Roque in 1999.
Most notable is that the top six paid-attendance Homestead Challenge games at the Homestead Sports Complex are Miami games. The most recent Miami/FIU game drew a new-record 3,904 in paid attendance. For the first time last season, Miami hosted Homestead Challenge games at Mark Light Stadium.
