Romberg Named Rimington Award Finalist

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami junior center Brett Romberg was named one of five finalists for the Dave Rimington Trophy by the Boomer Esiason Foundation on Monday. The award is presented annually to the the nation’s premier college football center.

Joining Romberg as a finalist were: LeCharles Bentley of Ohio State, Mel Fowler of Maryland, Kyle Young of Clemson and Seth McKinney of Texas A&M. Romberg, a native of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, is completing his second season as Miami’s starting center. He has anchored an offensive line dubbed by many as college football’s finest and a unit that has spearheaded an offensive attack that allowed a national-low four quarterback sacks this season. With Romberg at center the Hurricanes have posted a 22-1 record since the start of the 2000 season. Miami has set school records for scoring each of the last two seasons, scoring 469 points in 2000 and 475 in 2001. The Hurricanes averaged more than 200 yards rushing and passing this season, averaging 204.6 yards on the ground and 250.2 yards per game passing.

The winner of the Rimington Trophy will be honored at a presentation banquet in Lincoln, Neb., on Dec. 15. Rimington, the award’s namesake, was a two-time consensus first-team All-America center at Nebraska and was the recipient of the Outland Trophy in 1981 and 1982 as the nation’s finest college interior lineman.
