Kevin Howard Leads USA Past Taiwan 6-4

July 25, 2001

Bridgeport, CT — – Team USA’s Bobby Brownlie (RHP, So, Rutgers) improved to 6-0 on the summer by throwing seven solid innings as the USA Baseball National Team (17-5-1) defeated Taiwan 6-4, Monday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. It was Team USA’s 27th consecutive win over the Taiwanese National Team, in games played dating back to 1990.

Taiwan jumped on the scoreboard first in this one, when three singles, two walks and hit batsman produced a pair of runs in the second inning off Brownlie. But the Rutgers righty settled down after that and limited the Taipei hitters to just three more hits, while he struck out four. All told, Brownlie fanned seven on the night in the midst of picking up histeam-leading sixth victory.

Team USA’s offense finally got to Taiwanese starter Chien Fu Yang in the fifth when they pieced together a five-run rally. The key hits in the frame were Jeff Baker’s (IF, So, Clemson) bases-loaded single that gave the Red, White and Blue a 3-2 lead, and Kevin Howard’s (IF, So, Miami) run-scoring double. Howard went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI on the night, extending his hitting streak to eight games.

Taiwan tallied two runs in the eighth off Royce Ring (LHP, So, San Diego St.), that cut into Team USA’s lead. But Bob Zimmermann (RHP, FR, SW Missouri St.) worked the final 1.1 innings without further damage, to notch his team-high fifth save.

The USA National Team has now won ten games in a row, and 15 of their last 18 games overall on the 2001 Red, White and Blue Tour under Head Coach Pat McMahon. There are six games remaining on the Tour.

The 2001 USA Baseball National Team Red, White and Blue Tour continues on Tuesday evening in Brooklyn, New York when Team USA and Taiwan play the third of this eight-game series. Mike Esposito (RHP, Fr, Arizona State) gets the nod for Team USA. For a roster, statistics and boxscores of the 2001 USA Baseball National Team, go to www.usabaseball.com.
