Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – Senior catcher Greg Lovelady signed a free agent contact with the Florida Marlins and was sent to the Class A Utica (NY) Blue Sox. Senior reliever Alex Prendes was inked by the Boston Red Sox and was sent to the Rookie League Gulf Coast Red Sox.

Lovelady, a Finance graduate, started the final three games of the College World Series, including his second career championship game. He hit a two-run double in the fifth inning vs. Southern California that proved to be the difference in a 4-3 UM victory. Prior to the CWS, he was named to the Coral Gables Regional All-Tournament team. Additionally, he was selected as the Arnold Novins Memorial Award winner, given to the most popular player as voted on by the fans, as well as voted a Co-Team Captain by his teammates.

Prendes, who will earn his degree in Business Management later this year, closed out his playing career by retiring the final three batters in the College World Series championship game vs. Stanford. With the third-most appearances in 2001 (34), Prendes pitched in more games than any UM pitcher since 1998. He has seen action in 87 games, all in relief, during his career. The mark is sixth all-time at Miami.
