Coral Gables, FL – The 2001 NCAA National Champion University of Miami Baseball team celebrated its fourth overall championship and the second in three years with a ceremony at Mark Light Stadium in Coral Gables, FL.

An estimated 3,500 fans came out to congratulate the Hurricanes on their championship season. Miami finished the season with a 53-12 record, including a season ending 17-game win streak, and were a perfect 9-0 in the post-season. The 53 wins were the most for Miami under head coach Jim Morris, who has now guided UM to two national titles and to the College World Series in seven of his eight seasons.

University President Donna Shalala opened the preceding by presenting Morris and the team with the 2001 NCAA Championship trophy. Several political dignitaries were in attendance including Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas, Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick and City of South Miami Mayor Julio Robaina. Also attending the celebration were Ramon Usapegui, the Chairman of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Sports Council, and Ron Robinson from the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce.

Penelas presented Morris with a proclamation officially naming June 18, 2001 as University of Miami Hurricanes Baseball day in Miami-Dade County.Mercedes Ray, representing mayor Joe Corrollo, proclaimed the week of June 16-23 to be University of Miami Baseball Week. Ray also presented Morris with a Salutation for a job well done.

Also presenting a proclamation was Slesnick who named June 18, 2001 as University of Miami Hurricanes NCAA Baseball Championship Day in Coral Gables. Robaina then handed Morris the Keys to the City of South Miami.

Miami seniors Kevin Brown, Charlton Jimerson, Tom Farmer and Greg Lovelady, as well as Morris, were then given the opportunity to address the crowd and thank them for their support all season.

The celebration concluded with UM players throwing tee shirts into the crowd. Fans were then invited onto the Mark Light Stadium for an autograph signing.
