Javy Rodriguez Named Louisville Slugger All-American

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – University of Miami junior shortstop Javy Rodriguez was selected to the Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-America Second Team as picked by the staff of Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
Rodriguez’ All-American honor is the first for the local product out of Gulliver Prep. He enters the NCAA Regional with has a national-best 57 stolen bases at a 1.06 per-game average. Rodriguez remains five steals away from tying the UM single season record of 62 held by Orlando Gonzalez during the 1974 season. He is also just the second player at Miami to have at least 50 stolen bases (57) and 50 RBI (51), following Calvin James in 1985.
Rodriguez was named the team’s MVP this season after leading the club with a .388 batting average, 78 hits, 51 RBI, four triples, 111 total bases and 57 stolen bases. He also has the second-highest on-base percentage (.457) and runs scored (52) and third-highest slugging percentage (.552). Among his accolades this season, was being chosen the Tournament MVP at the 2001 Hormel Foods Baseball Classic, hosted by the University of Minnesota, at the Hubert H. Humphrey MetroDome. Additionally, Rodriguez was one of the Hurricanes’ top clutch players with a team-high 10 game winning hits on the year. Among his game-winners was a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning that scored the game winning run against ninth-ranked Stetson.
