May 7, 2001

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – For the first time this season, the University of Miami baseball team (38-12) is ranked No. 1 in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Top 25 College Coaches’ Poll as selected by 41 Division I head baseball coaches representing the American Baseball Coaches Association.

The Hurricanes, who have been ranked as high as No. 3 in the Coaches’ Poll in this season, were last the No. 1-ranked team after claiming the National Championship in 1999 with their 6-5 win over Florida State in the title game at the College World Series. In the most recent poll, Miami has 945 overall points and 10 first-place votes, ahead of No. 2 Nebraska (898 points and eight first-place votes).

Miami will return to action this weekend with Florida Southern in a three-game series, beginning Friday. All three games, as well as broadcast over the Internet at hurricanesports.com and WVUM, can be heard on UM’s flagship station, Sports Radio 560 WQAM. WACC 830 AM will carry the Friday game in Spanish.
