Hurricanes Are Peoples' Choice As College Football's Top Team

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The Miami Hurricanes lead the way in a poll to predict college football’s 2001 national champion and UM quarterback Ken Dorsey also ranks among the leading Heisman Trophy candidates in a pair of fan surveys by viewers of the Sportsline.com website sponsored by CBS Sports.

The poll, which remains active for fan voting at present, can be accessed for voting by fans at www.sportsline.com by clicking the college football link.

Miami and Florida, who met on January 2 in the Nokia Sugar Bowl with the Hurricanes taking a 37-20 victory, are the leading teams in the fans vote for the nation’s top teams for next season as of 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 10. Miami has garnered 37,935 votes while UF is second with 34,377 tallies. Nebraska is third (31,409), Florida State fourth (28,573) and defending national champion Oklahoma fifth (27,792). Rounding out the top 10: No. 6 Oregon State, No. 7 Texas, No. 8 Tennessee, No. 9 Michigan and No. 10 Oregon.

Miami returns 16 starters (six on offense, eight on defense and both kicking specialists) to a squad that went 11-1 in 2000 and won the BIG EAST title while attaining a final ranking of No. 2 in both major polls. The Hurricanes also return a bevy of honors candidates led by 2000 consensus first-team All-America strong safety Edward Reed and Dorsey, a junior who is being widely mentioned as an early front-runner for the Davey O’Brien and Johnny Unitas quaterback awards as well as the Heisman Trophy.

Dorsey has led the Hurricanes to victory in 14 of his 15 starting assignments at Miami. The junior from Miramonte, CA, ranks fifth in Sportsline’s early Heisman balloting by college football fans with 38,348 votes. Ahead of Dorsey is Nebraska signalcaller Eric Crouch with 42,838 votes, followed by Northwestern running back Damien Anderson (42,587), Michigan QB Drew Henson (42,500) and Oregon State RB Ken Simonton (40,213).
