Hurricane Club golf Tournament Raises $50,000

Feb. 21, 2001

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – (www.hurricanesports.com) – The Hurricane Football Golf Classic was held at the beautiful Crandon Park Key Biscayne on Tuesday, February 13, 2001. The playing field consisted of over 100 golfers.

The Hurricane Football Golf Classic, held one week after the Senior PGA tour, raised $50,000 and will benefit the Football Facilities project.

This event included many of South Florida’s top businesses, along with many current and former UM football greats. The celebrity event consisted of Hurricane football Head Coach Larry Coker and his staff of Vernon Hargreaves, Art Kehoe, Don Soldinger, and Greg Mark. Current players in attendance include Ken Dorsey, Joaquin Gonzalez, Brett Romberg, Joe Fantigrassi, Bradley Kunz and Andre King.

The celebrity list of former UM players who competed in the four-man scramble were: Ryan McNeil, Robert Bailey, Bubba Franks, Don Bailey Jr., George Mira Sr., George Mira Jr., Craig Erickson, Gino Torretta, Cortez Kennedy, Nick Williams, Rusty Medearis, Darrell Fullington, Twan Russell, Russell Maryland, Steve Walsh, and Darryl Williams.

Head Coach Larry Coker joined the action on the challenging Par 3 12th hole. Coach Coker putted against each foursome and celebrity for game tickets to 2001 football games. There were no losers on this hole as either Washington or Rutgers tickets were handed out dependent upon Coach Coker’s accuracy.

The day began with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. and concluded with an awards dinner in the clubhouse. The course proved to be very challenging but in the end, George Mira Sr. and corporate foursome Fox Sports Net walked away with bragging rights and a firstplace finish shooting a 57.

We would like to thank Karen Campbell and the Crandon Park staff for their assistance. A very special thanks to our gold sponsors- Quality Communications, The Dauer Family Foundation, Fox Sports Net, and Coastal Construction.
