King's Court Reflects on Big Win
Nov. 6, 2000
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – – Well Hurricane fans, Saturday we took yet another step closer to where we want to be come January 4th.
Saturday against the Hokies of Virginia Tech was a total team victory. We knew going into the game that we would have to play flawless in all three phases – offense, defense and special teams. Especially on special teams where they blocks punts and have big returns almost every game that they have won so far.
We spent a lot of time last week emphasizing fundamental and proper technique in order to prevent any big plays from their package. As you can see those hard practices really paid off. That was a major reason why we came out on top.
Offensively we just forced them to cover the entire field. We wanted the distribution of our offense so precise that they couldn’t just focus on one particular player During the game they didn’t know which direction we were coming from, it worked out great!
Defensively we played tenacious. We created turnovers and allowed our offensive football team to convert those Virgina Tech miscues into scoring opportunities. Our D-line rushed the passer and pressured him in to mistakes, linebackers were hitting hard and filling the holes and the secondary covered receivers like a blanket and made interceptions. It didn’t matter who was playing quarterback that day, we were obviously prepared for whatever they did.
In the past five years it was our team that turned the ball over, but on Saturday our defense created big plays and that in turn enabled us to add points to the scoreboard.
Special teams play was also a big contributor – we covered punts and kickoffs and were pretty much mistake free. So it all came together for a big win and this is now another game to savor this season.
So what does all this mean? Well nothing yet, we still have three more tough games to prepare for and it begins this week with Pittsburgh. Now all three games are big, we have now gone from the hunter to the hunted. Everyone will be trying to knock us out of the race so we must be prepared, and we will be.
I just want to say one thing about this BCS business. Championship games are determined on the grass fields around the country each and every year and these contest should remain there and not be decided in cyberspace.
In closing I would like to thank my good friends Brian Harff and his girlfriend/wife someday Lauren Pellegrino for being good luck charms in ending the 10-year depression against the the ‘Noles and the Hokies this year. For fans out there, these were Lauren’s first two Hurricane games ever. I think we should keep her. What do you think? It’s nice to have great friends who are loyal. Enjoy!!!
‘Til next time ‘Cane fans.
From a ‘Cane to all the ‘Cane fans,
Andre’
