UM Works Through One Sunday Practice

Aug. 20, 2000

CORAL GABLES, Fla. ( – The University of Miami Hurricanes practiced for two hours Sunday afternoon in pads and shorts in a non-contact workout at the Greentree Practice Field on the UM campus.

The practice featured work in all phases of the game as head coach Butch Davis and his staff sought to minimize contact following Saturday morning’s full-scale scrimmage. “We’re winding down to the end of two-a-days and we’re trying to go a little easier in contact,” Davis said. “We’ve really made some progress in several areas, particularly the return units. We have some depth and some options with our return men and that allows us to showcase some skilled people and lessen the load on some others.”

Davis mentioned one change on the depth chart as junior Sheven Marshall (Princeton, Fla., South Dade HS) has moved into the starting spot at weakside linebacker. “Sheven has demonstrated on a consistent basis his ability to handle the job, it’s definitely something he’s earned,” Davis said.

After skipping a scheduled Saturday evening practice, Davis said he is confident and encouraged by the team’s performance in the scrimmage.

“We had a very good practice today and it just reinforces the feeling we had when watching the tape of yesterday’s scrimmage,” Davis said.

Davis reported two new injuries, a pair of ankle sprains to reserve tight end Jeremy Shockey and reserve tailback Jarrett Payton. Both injuries are not believed to be serious, but both players are expected to miss at least two more days of practices.

“It’s more of a cautious approach by our medical staff than anything else,” Davis said. “We’re confident they’ll be fine for the opener (on Aug. 31 vs. McNeese State).”

Two-a-day practices continue Monday with a morning session scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.. and an afternoon practice slated for 3:30 p.m. All practices are closed to the public.
