Hurricanes Earn Academic Accolades

Coral Gables, FL – For the seventh time in eight years the University of Miami football team has earned honorable mention status from the American Football Coaches Association for having a graduation rate of 70 percent or better.
The Hurricane football program receives this prestigious honor for graduating 73.3 percent of its 1994 freshman class. Since 1992, UM football players have graduated at an average rate of 71 percent per year.
“We take great pride in this honor,” said head coach Butch Davis. “Our program places a tremendous emphasis on the academic success of our players. This is a testament to the dedication and hard work they put forth.”
Miami is one of only eight schools to receive honorable mention status for six consecutive years (1992-98) and has exceeded the national average for 12 straight seasons. The overall graduation rate of the 97 institutions participating in this year’s survey was 57 percent.
Miami was one of three BIG EAST schools honored. Syracuse received the 2000 AFCA Academic Achievement Award for recording a 100 percent graduation. Boston College joined the Hurricanes as one of 26 schools to earn honorable mention status.
Other institutions to receive honorable mention honors were: Ball State, Baylor. Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Clemson, Duke, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Marshall, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Purdue, Rice, South Carolina, Southern California, Southern Methodist, Tulane, Tulsa, Virginia, Wake Forest and Wisconsin.
