Football Concludes Day Two Of Spring Practice

March 9, 2000

Coral Gables, FL – The University of Miami football team continued spring practice this afternoon with a two and a half four workout in helmet and shoulder pads at the Greentree Practice Facility on the UM campus.

Following pre-practice warm-ups, the team broke off into their respective position groups to work on fundamental drills.

Head Coach Butch Davis addressed the importance of veteran leadership at the start of spring practice.

“You look for the older guys to set a standard for practice habits,” commented Davis. “If you watch Santana (Moss) and Reggie (Wayne), they practice as if the National Championship was on the line in each and every practice.

“The other thing that you look for in spring practice is to watch the unknown guys. How much are they growing and getting better each day. The encouraging thing is that this football team is hungry to get better.”

Coach Davis later applauded the play of No. 2 quarterback Ethenic Sands following the Hurricanes second practice of the spring. Sands played his freshman season at wide receiver, but entered spring practice as the Hurricanes No. 2 quarterback.

“I was very pleased with the way Ethenic threw the ball,” said Davis. “He threw the ball today like a true quarterback. He came out and made some good reads and good throws. He looked real good doing those things.”

The Hurricanes will throw on the full pads for their first full-contact practice on Friday, prior to having off for Spring Break. Practice will resume on March 21.

Spring Practice will conclude with CanesFest and the annual Spring Game at the Orange Bowl on Saturday, April 8. This year’s CanesFest will feature the unveiling of the Hurricanes new uniforms for the 2000 season. Events for CanesFest will include season-ticket select-a-seat, “Ask the Coach” session, Fun Zone interactive area and an autograph session following the game with Hurricane players and coaches.
