Hurricanes Enter BIG EAST Play

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 24th ranked University of Miami football team held atwo-hour workout in full pads on Tuesday afternoon at the Greentree PracticeFacility. With the practice, the Hurricanes began their preparation for theMiami-Temple game on Saturday at 4 p.m., the first of seven consecutive BIGEAST contests.
Following the practice, Head Coach Butch Davis was pleased with theworkout describing it as a learning experience in preparing for Temple.
“It was a pretty solid practice today,” said Davis. “Today was a goodlearning day. Certainly tomorrow we will really pick up the intensity.”Davis also addressed Miami’s matchup with the Hurricane defense.
“Temple is considerably different on defense than any other team that we’vefaced thus far this season,” said Davis. “They run different schemes thanFlorida State, Penn State or Ohio State. We haven’t played any one whoresembles them on defense. Temple has a lot of team speed, which issomething we have to be prepared for.”
Sophomore running back Najeh Davenport and senior linebacker Michael Smithare both out for the year with right knee injuries. Junior linebacker DanMorgan (hamstring) is day-to-day.
The Hurricanes will return to practice on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.at the Greentree Practice Facility. Practices are closed to the public.
MORGAN, WEBSTER – NAGURSKI CANDIDATES: Junior linebackers Dan Morganand Nate Webster are two of 20 candidates for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy,presented by the Football Writers Association of America to the nation’sbest defensive player. Five finalists for the award will be announced inlate November. The award will be announced on December 6 in Charlotte, NC.
TUMBA LA CASA: The University of Miami and HealthSouth Doctors’ Hospitalwill host “Tumba La Casa” as part of Hispanic Heritage Day at Saturday’sMiami-Temple football game at the Orange Bowl. Highlighting the festivitieswill be a concert by salsa sensation Oscar D’Leon following the footballgame.
Hispanic Heritage Day, presented by HealthSouth Doctors’ Hospital,will commemorate the Hispanic culture in the South Florida community. Thecelebration will begin at 2:00 p.m. with games and ethnic food in TouchdownAlley. There will be a Hispanic themed halftime show as well as specialmusic and promotions throughout the game. “Tumba La Casa” will culminatewith a concert with D’Leon and his band La Salsa Mayor following thefootball game.
D’Leon is a genuine music legend who possibly is the most recognizedVenezuelan artist. As the global messenger of tropical and salsa music,this “sonero” has performed at Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall, LincolnCenter, Miami Arena and throughout Europe and Asia.
