PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Virginia Tech quarterback MICHAEL VICK has beennamedBIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced today.Syracuse defensive end DUKE PETTIJOHN and Temple defensive end DAN KLECKOshared defensive honors, with Miami punter FREDDIE CAPSHAW earning SpecialTeams Player of the Week.

Vick (Newport News, Va.) turned in a nearly perfect first half enroute toVirginia Tech’s 58-20 win at Rutgers. The redshirt freshman quarterbackaccounted for five touchdowns in the first half, registering 316 yards oftotal offense. He set a new BIG EAST record for completion percentage(.917), hitting on 11-of-12 passes for 248 yards and four touchdowns. Healso rushed for a team-leading 68 yards, including a 22-yard score. Hetied a school record with the four scoring tosses, matching former HokiesDon Strock (1972) and Maurice DeShazo (1993, twice). In his last twogames, Vick has completed 18-of-21 passes and has recorded 578 yards oftotal offense.

Pettijohn (Mattapan, Mass.) led the Syracuse defense in theOrangemen’s24-17 win at Pittsburgh on Thursday night. The junior defensive end hadfour sacks, tying a BIG EAST single-game record. Included in the totalwasa 12-yard sack late in the fourth quarter with Pittsburgh facing afirst-and-10 at the SU 24-yard line on the game’s final drive. Pettijohnfinished with five stops, including four tackles for losses of 21 yards.

Klecko (Colts Neck, N.J.) led the Temple defense as the Owls postedtheirfirst win of the season with a 24-14 victory over Boston College. Thefreshman defensive end had eight tackles, including four for losses of 24yards. He had two sacks, both on the same drive in the third quarter,withthe game tied, 14-14. After BC had returned a kickoff to the TU 39-yardline, Klecko had a nine-yard sack on first down, followed by a five-yardsack on third down. The losses forced the Eagles to punt and Templefollowed with the go-ahead touchdown.

Capshaw (Rock Springs, Wyo.) registered six punts for 263 yards inMiami’s31-21 loss to No. 1 Florida State. The redshirt freshman punter averaged43.8 yards, dropping three punts inside the 20-yard line. Two ofCapshaw’spunts landed at the Seminole three-yard line. Capshaw’s punt of 57 yardsin the third quarter set a career high.
