Hurricanes Hitting Stride In Game Preparation

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 19th ranked University of Miami football team held atwo-hour workout in full pads on Wednesday afternoon at the GreentreePractice Facility. With the practice, the Hurricanes continued preparationfor their matchup with top ranked Florida State on Saturday, October 9 inTallahassee, FL.
Following the practice, Head Coach Butch Davis was pleased with theteam’s workout on Thursday as well as UM’s performance and attitudethroughout the week.
“We practiced well today,” said Davis. “We were a lot more comfortable withthe gameplan. Execution of the gameplan has been good as well. We havethrown and caught the ball very well this week. Defensively, I like theattitude that the defense has been practicing with this week.”
Sophomore running back Najeh Davenport and senior linebacker Michael Smithare both out for the year with right knee injuries. Junior defensive tackleDamione Lewis (right knee sprain), senior defensive end Michael Boireau(right ankle sprain), junior fullback Wilbur Valdez (groin), junior runningback James Jackson (right ankle sprain) and Will McPartland (concussion) areall day-to-day.
The Hurricanes will return to practice on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at theGreentree Practice Facility. Practices are closed to the public.
MIAMI-FLORIDA STATE MEMORY LANE: On October 3, 1992 in “Wide RightII”, Miami defeated Florida State, 19-16. In the longest game in UM history(3:57) Miami escaped with its third straight victory over the Florida Stateas a last second game-tying field goal attempt by FSU’s Dan Mowry’s kicksailed wide right. Florida State opened the scoring when Tamarick Vanovertook the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown. Miami followed with a 24yard Dane Prewitt field goal and a 29 yard touchdown pass from Gino Torrettato Coleman Bell. Florida State then answered with three Dan Mowry fieldgoals to give the Seminoles a 16-10 lead. Torretta then drove Miami 58 yardsin seven plays to give UM a 17-16 lead. After an illegal forward pass inthe endzone by FSU punt returner Corey Sawyer Miami was awarded a safety topush the lead to 19-16. FSU then marched 59 yards to set up Mowry’s 39 yardfield goal attempt.
UM-FSU TO BE VIEWED BY 60% OF NATION: The ABC telecast of thisSaturday’s Miami-Florida State game will available to 60% of the nation.Twenty three percent of the nation will receive the Michigan-Michigan Stategame, while 17% (the Pacific Time Zone) of the nation will receive neithernoon game, but instead will receive the California-BYU game which starts at7 p.m. Eastern Time.
