Sept. 8, 1999

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The eighth ranked University of Miami footballteam conducted a one-hour, 45-minute workout in full pads on a rainyWednesday afternoon at the Greentree Practice Facility. With the workout, the Hurricanes continued preparation for their matchup with No. 2 Penn Stateat the Orange Bowl on September 18.

Following the practice, Head Coach Butch Davis complimented theteam’s play during the practice which was hit by heavy rain.

“We had a very good practice today,” said Davis. “The first half ofthe practice was in the sun and the second half of it was totally in therain. I think it’s good for our team to have that kind of preparation.Historically, there are always one or two games played in the rain whetherit is in the Orange Bowl or on the road. It (practicing in the rain) forcesthe players to focus and execute with a wet ball.”

Davis also commented on the benefits of having an open week. Miamidoes not play this Saturday, before meeting Penn State the following week.

“We’re using this week as an opportunity to go back and refine somethings,” said Davis. “Special teams in particular are always a focus duringan open week.”
