Miami Football Returns To Practice

CORAL GABLES, FL – The eighth ranked University of Miami footballteam conducted a 90-minute workout in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts onTuesday afternoon at the Greentree Practice Facility. With the workout, theHurricanes returned to practice following a 57-3 win over Florida A&M intheir home opener on September 4. Miami’s next action will be on September18, a showdown with No. 2 Penn State at the Orange Bowl.

Following the practice, Head Coach Butch Davis applauded the team’sperformance at the practice after a two-day layoff.

“The practice went well,” said Davis. ” I was very pleased with howthe kids worked today after two days off.”

Davis also reflected on the team’s play vs. Florida A&M,specifically on special teams.The Hurricanes excelled on punt coverage allowing just two punt returns fornegative 13 yards off seven punts. Furthermore, junior Aaron Moser blockeda punt that resulted in the first safety of the Butch Davis era. Theblocked punt marked the 31st blocked kick in Davis’ 47 games at Miami.

“I felt the highlight of the whole night was the special teamsplay”, said Davis. “I didn’t think we played particularly well vs. OhioState on special teams, so we challenged the kids to do better and theyresponded.”

Running back Najeh Davenport (torn ACL, right knee) is out for theyear. There were no new injuries to report.Miami returns to practice with a workout at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at theGreentree Practice Facility. Practices are closed to the public.

PUBLIX SPREADS CANES FEVER: For the 16th year, Publix Supermarkets and theUniversity of Miami have joined together for the Canes Fever Program. CanesFever is an eight-week merchandising program that generates funds for theUniversity of Miami Scholarship Fund which benefits all 18 of UM’s varsitysports. As of September 1, 144 vendors have joined the program. Publix willadvertise and display specially marked Canes Fever items from these vendors.A portion of the proceeds from the participating vendors of the Canes Feverprogram will be contributed to the University of Miami Scholarship Fund.

BUTCH DAVIS SHOW, HURRICANE FINAL TAPING AT NIKETOWN: This week’s taping ofthe Butch Davis Television Show, along with Hurricane Football Final, willbe taped at NikeTown on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. The Butch Davis Show, ahalf-hour program hosted by WPLG-Channel 10 sportscaster Frank Forte, airsat 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays on Channel 10 and SportsChannel Florida.Hurricane Football Final, a 15-minute program hosted by WTVJ sportscasterJoe Rose on Sunday nights at 11:45 p.m., will be taped immediately followingthe Butch Davis Show. The tapings are open to the public.
