Hurricanes Impress at Scrimmage

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami football team participated in a100-play, pre-season scrimmage in front of an estimated 1,500 specatators atthe Cobb Stadium Saturday morning on the UM campus.
Head Coach Butch Davis came away from the scrimmage pleased with theHurricanes’ performance at the workout. In particular, Davis pointed outthe play of quarterbacks Kenny Kelly and Ken Dorsey as well as the teamdefense.
“This was probably the most encouraging scrimmage that I have had in thefive years that we’ve been here as a coaching staff,” said Davis. “Ithought there were plenty of positives. Kenny Kelly and Ken Dorsey hadoutstanding scrimmages from the standpoint of being able to come out thereand really make some plays. I thought the defense was excellent at times.When they cranked it up they were really tough to move the ball on.”
Kicker Andy Crosland opened the scoring with back-to-back field goals.
Freshman quarterback Ken Dorsey lofted a 65 yard pass to freshman receiverAndre Johnson to record the contest’s first touchdown eight series later.Junior running back James Jackson’s followed with a four-yard scramble forthe game’s second TD. Dorsey later found sophomore tight end Dan Smith fora seven-yard toss pass the goal line.
Dorsey finished the scrimmage.14-18 for 236 yards and two touchdowns to leadthe five Hurricane quarterbacks who saw action. Kelly was 6-15 with 65yards with the first team.
Sophomore running back Najeh Davenport managed 77 yards on 13 carries tolead the team in rushing. Freshman tailback Clinton Portis followed thateffort with eight rushes for 42 yards.
Freshman Troy Prasek threw the scrimmage’s final touchdown when he connectedwith Kevin Beard with a 75 yard bomb. Beard, a freshman, totaled fivecatches for 117 yards.
Miami receivers tallied 26 catches for 401 yards, led by Andre Johnson’s 126yards on three receptions. Redshort freshman Ethenic Sands had fourreceptions for 50 yards
Defensively, junior linebacker Jevon Rhodes, freshman defensive end JimWilson and senior defensive end Matt Sweeney all registered quarterbacksacks. Junior linebacker Dan Morgan registered five total tackles to leadall defenders.
