Football Looks Forward to Scrimmage
Aug. 13, 1999
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 1999 University of Miami football team held atwo-hour morning practice in full pads at the Greentree Practice Facility. The afternoon session was limited in time and intensity due tothunderstorms. All together, work was light on Friday in anticipation ofSaturday’s scrimmage at 8:30 a.m. at the Cobb Stadium.
The morning session began with work within individual position groupsfollowed by the inside run drill. Practice concluded with 7-on-7 and 9-on-9scrimmaging.
Head Coach Butch Davis came away from the workout pleased with the offense’sperformance.
“This was one of the better offensive practices that we’ve had this entirecamp,” said Davis. “So far, the defense has dominated practice, but todaythe offense was efficient and did not commit a single turnover. I think ourreceivers really caught the ball well. Santana Moss and Andre King madesome great catches, and Daniel Franks and Robert Williams looked good attight end. Also, our offensive line is really protecting and limiting theamount of pressure put on the quarterback.”
On the defensive side of the ball, Davis praised the work of senior MattSweeney.
“Matt is a tenacious defender who keeps coming and coming,” said Davis.”He’s got the burning desire that defensive tackles need to make plays.”
Offensive guard Richard Mercier (calf), junior wide receiver Daryl Jones(hamstring), freshman defensive lineman Jamaal Green (groin) and offensivetackle Joaquin Gonzalez (ankle) were all limited on Friday due to nagginginjuries.
On Saturday at 8:30 a.m., Miami will hold an open scrimmage at the CobbStadium on the UM campus. Admission is free.
