Freshman Football Continues Practice; Varsity Reports

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 1999 University of Miami freshman footballclass continued fall practice with a two-hour practice session in helmetsand shoulder pads at the Greentree Practice Facility.

The workout, which began at 9:20 a.m., consisted of pre-practice routines,individual position drills as well as punt return and coverage work.

Following the workout, Head Coach Butch Davis commented on thefreshman class’ adjustment to the hot, humid conditions at Greentree Field.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re from Miami or Alaska, everybody’s hot,”said Davis. “We’re trying to encourage the players to drink water even ifthey’re not thirsty. They’re beginning to realize the importance ofhydration.”

On Saturday afternoon, the varsity squad reported. The veteranswere fitted for equipment and given physical tests. Later in the day, theentire squad met for the first time as a group in 1999.

Full-squad practices begin at 8:30 a.m., Monday, at the Greentree PracticeFacility. The Hurricanes’ first day in pads is scheduled for Thursday,Augsut 12, while the team will scrimmage for the first time on Saturday,August 14 at 8:30 a.m. at Cobb Stadium. Through the scrimmage on August 14, practices are open to the public.

MEDIA ADVISORY:
The Hurricanes will conduct Media Day on Sunday, August 8, 1-3:00 p.m. atthe Knight Sports Complex on the UM campus. At Media Day, Head Coach ButchDavis and the entire Hurricane squad will be available to the media.
