Canes Continue Spring Season
April 7, 1999
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -The University of Miami football team continuedspring practice this afternoon with a two and a half four workout infullpads at the Greentree Practice Facility on the UM campus.
Following pre-practice warm-ups,the team broke off into theirrespective position groups. The Hurricanes closed out practicewith an11-on-11 scrimmage.
“The hardest thing aboutspring practice is that one side of theball always wins,” commented Head Coach Butch Davis. “When theoffense winsit creates some concerns defensively. The defense got smashedtoday inshort yardage and goal line scrimmaging. The first time we didit a weekago, I would say the defense probably got the best of the offense onthatday. Today the offense was excellent and took them (defense)to school. Iwas disappointed in the intensity, tackling and overall execution.”
Coach Davis later applaudedthe play of offensive standoutsquarterback Kenny Kelly and tight end Daniel “Bubba” Franks followingtoday’s practice.
“Kenny Kelly was outstandingtoday. He threw the ball well and madeexcellent decisions. Bubba was just spectacular. He isone of the mostuniquely gifted kids I’ve ever been around. He is a dynamic blockerandexcellent route runner. A great “go-to” guy that can catch theball withguys hanging all over him. He is really practicing well.”
