CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Jeb Bargfeldt delivered a dominant outing on the hill, sophomore Romy Gonzalez connected on a towering three-run home run, and Miami took Game 1 of a doubleheader over No. 10 Virginia, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field.
Bargfeldt (6-3) tossed the first complete game by a Hurricane since May 2015.
The Owasso, Okla., native was a model of efficiency against the top-hitting team in the ACC, needing just 107 pitches to get through the outing.
He struck out six batters, walked one and allowed just three hits in a scintillating performance in front of 3,669 fans.
“Jeb was outstanding,” head coach Jim Morris said. “He stayed ahead of the hitters, he kept his pitch count down…he did a great job of getting ahead. Virginia is one of the top-ranked teams in the country. They’re a very good club, a very good hitting club.”
Other than a solo home run in the fourth, Bargfeldt allowed just one batter to reach as far as second base – in the game’s first inning.
“I filled the zone up with a mix of my pitches, and had command of the fastball to both sides of the plate,” Bargfeldt said. “Obviously I didn’t strike everyone out – I wanted them to put the ball in play because my defense was playing really well behind me.”
With Friday’s scheduled series opener postponed a day due to rain, Miami put together one of its best performances of the season in a matchup of two of the top three teams in the ACC Coastal Division.
The Hurricanes out-hit the Cavaliers, 7-3, did not make any errors in the field and received a gem from their ace to start their weekend off with some momentum.
Game 2 of the doubleheader was slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
Miami (25-24, 13-11 ACC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on an RBI double from senior Johnny Ruiz in the first inning.
With junior Carl Chester on second base after a leadoff single and groundout, Ruiz cranked the first pitch he saw from Virginia lefthander Daniel Lynch into left and off the glove of outfielder Jake McCarthy to open the game’s scoring.
Two innings later, Gonzalez’ team-leading 11th home run of the season pushed the Miami lead to 4-0.
With Chester on third and junior Michael Burns on second, Gonzalez cleared the left field bleachers with a monstrous three-run blast.
Virginia (36-12, 14-11 ACC) got a run back in the fourth on a solo home run from Adam Haseley off Bargfeldt.
The Haseley homer was one of very few mistakes on the day for Bargfeldt, who went at least seven innings for the third time in his last four starts.
“They’re a great lineup. There’s a lot of guys in that lineup who can hurt you,” Bargfeldt said. “They put the ball in play, do a lot of motion, kind of a scrappy lineup. I really just tried to focus on hitting my spots and mixing pitches.”
Miami tacked onto its lead and chased Lynch in the sixth.
After allowing a single to Gonzalez and a walk to redshirt senior Christopher Barr, Lynch was pulled in favor of reliever Jack Roberts, who promptly walked senior Joe Gomez to load the bases.
With two outs, Virginia went to reliever Grant Donahue, whose first pitch got past catcher Robbie Coman and rolled to the backstop, scoring Gonzalez and putting Miami ahead, 5-1.
With the two-out walk, Barr successfully reached base for the 21st straight game.
Lynch (6-3) was tagged for six hits and five runs in 5.2 innings. He struck out four, walked two and threw 87 pitches in the loss.
The Hurricanes and Cavaliers will return to Davenport Field Sunday for the series finale. First pitch for the contest, slated for broadcast on ACC Network Extra and WVUM 90.5 FM, is set for 1 p.m.
