CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second straight weekend, Miami junior righthander Jesse Lepore fell victim to a hard-luck 1-0 loss, this one to Dartmouth in a weekend series opener at Mark Light Field.
A week after tossing a gem on the road against No. 2 Florida, Lepore went a career-long 8.0 innings in the defeat. The Beverly Hills, Fla., native struck out six batters and allowed just four hits and three walks.
“All in all, [Dartmouth] was an aggressive team,” Lepore said. “I was just trying to pound the strike zone and let my stuff speak for itself, and get quick outs and get the game rolling.”
Lepore (1-2), who tossed six innings of one-run ball against the Gators, gave up hits on his first two pitches and allowed just two more over the final 98 of his outing.
“It’s frustrating, but we’re taking this as an opportunity to get better as a team,” Lepore said. “This is something we build off of. It’s still early in the season. I’m looking forward to getting better from here.”
Big Green righthander Beau Sulser delivered an impressive performance of his own in front of 2,113 fans.
Sulser (2-0) struck out 10 batters in seven shutout innings. He allowed two hits and one walk before being relieved by Chris Burkholder to start the eighth.
Burkholder pitched two scoreless innings to earn his second save of the season.
Big Green leadoff hitter Trevor Johnson cracked the first pitch of the game into left field for a double. Matt Feinstein followed with another double to shallow right, this one aided by strong winds, for a 1-0 Dartmouth lead.
“I’d like to congratulate Dartmouth for the win,” head coach Jim Morris said. “Jesse pitched outstanding. The one run they got we should have caught in the outfield. You have to go out prepared for the wind. The wind was blowing in batting practice, and that ball has to be caught.”
That was all the offense the Big Green (3-1) would need on a night when Sulser was in a groove.
Senior Johnny Ruiz opened the second inning with a ground-rule double that got caught in the wall in left, but he was stranded a third when Nico Baldor struck out swinging to end the inning.
Junior Carl Chester led off the fourth with an infield single, but Sulser picked him off and retired the next two batters to maintain his team’s 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Andrew Cabezas tossed a scoreless ninth inning, but Miami was retired in order by Burkholder in the ninth.
The two teams return to Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field for Game 2 of the series Saturday night. First pitch, slated for broadcast on ACC Network Extra and WVUM 90.5 FM, is set for 7 p.m.
