TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 4 Miami fell to No. 14 Florida State on a walk-off home run by Jackson Lueck in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium.
Despite the loss, which came in the second game of a doubleheader, Miami (43-10, 21-7 ACC) emerged with its first series victory in Tallahassee since 2008.
The Hurricanes won the ACC Regular Season Championship earlier in the day with an 8-5 victory over Florida State (34-18, 16-9 ACC) in the first game of the doubleheader.
Miami junior lefthander Danny Garcia, on a predetermined pitch count with the ACC Baseball Championship looming next week in Durham, N.C., tossed 55 pitches in three innings. He struck out two batters and allowed just one run on an RBI groundout by Steven Wells Jr., in the second.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, Miami manufactured a run to tie the game. Junior Jacob Heyward opened the inning with a double, advanced to third base on a flyout, and beat a throw home on a chopper towards first by Joe Gomez to knot the game 1-1.
Redshirt freshman Keven Pimentel was effective in relief after entering in the bottom of the fourth inning. Pimentel threw 46 pitches over three scoreless innings, surrendering three hits and two walks.
The righthander stranded bases loaded in the fourth, and single runners in the fourth and fifth to hold the score at 1-1.
Junior Willie Abreu put the Hurricanes ahead with his second home run of the day and 11th of the season in the seventh inning. After belting a solo home run in the second inning of Game 1 of the doubleheader, Abreu connected on another deep shot over the high fence in right to give Miami a 2-1 lead.
Abreu’s home run came off Florida State reliever Alec Byrd, who entered in relief after an impressive performance from Florida State starter Tyler Holton.
The freshman lefthander kept Miami largely at bay throughout his six innings of work. Holton struck out eight batters and surrendered just two hits and one walk in 95 pitches.
Florida State rallied to tie the game in the home half of the seventh, however, as an RBI double by Cal Raleigh off Miami righthander Devin Meyer evened the game 2-2.
Senior lefthander Thomas Woodrey pitched a scoreless eighth inning and into the ninth, where junior Ryan Guerra retired the final out on a groundout by Quincy Nieporte to strand two runners.
Lueck connected on a solo home run to center on the second pitch he saw from Guerra in the tenth to give Florida State the victory.
The Hurricanes, who clinched the ACC Regular Season Championship earlier in the afternoon, will be the top seed at next week’s 2016 ACC Baseball Championship in Durham, N.C.
