Diaz's Gem Not Enough in 1-0 Loss to Clemson

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Despite a career-high trying seven strikeouts from junior left-handed pitcher Chris Diaz, the University of Miami baseball team fell 1-0 Friday night to the visiting 12th-ranked Clemson Tigers at Alex Rodriguez Park.
Diaz (3-3) scattered four hits and walked only one batter in his eight innings of work. However, it wasn’t enough as the Canes (25-16, 8-11 ACC) were unable to score any of their seven base runners on the night.
The game’s only run would come in the top of the sixth. After a leadoff walk and a one-out single, the Tigers’ Thomas Brittle hit a grounder to second that was slow enough to avoid the double play and score Jon McGibbon from third.
Clemson’s Daniel Gossett (6-2) matched Diaz in the pitcher’s duel, striking out 10 UM batters, while allowing only three hits in seven innings.
“It was definitely a pitcher’s duel,” said Miami head coach Jim Morris. “Gossett threw a little bit better than Chris did, but both teams played good defense. They got a big hit and we didn’t is what it came down to.”
Miami freshman David Thompson was the only player to record multiple hits on the night and was the Hurricanes’ biggest threat to get on the board. With two outs in the fourth, Thompson ripped a single though the left side for his second hit of the night. He would then steal second and reach third on pass ball. The Tigers, however, would get out of the inning after inducing a ground ball to short off the bat of Alex San Juan.
Due to impending inclement weather, the Canes and Tigers will continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled 7 p.m. The three-game set will conclude with a televised contest (CSS/ESPN3) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
