Baseball Drops Game Two to No. 9 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Miami jumped out to an early lead for the second consecutive game, but struggled to generate offense late in a 8-1 loss to No. 9 Virginia at Davenport Field.
The Hurricanes (19-11, 4-7 ACC) struck first again Saturday afternoon, jumping out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from sophomore catcher Garrett Kennedy in the second inning.
After Michael Broad walked to lead off the frame, freshman Ricky Eusebio laid down a sacrifice bunt to set up the scoring chance. Kennedy’s single, which dropped into rightfield, was deep enough to plate Broad, who slid in at home just before the tag of Virginia catcher Nate Irving.
The hosts would respond, however, plating three runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 3-1 lead.
After junior lefthander Bryan Radziewski allowed two baserunners to open the inning, Nick Howard’s hard-hit grounder to short looked like a potential double play opportunity for the Hurricanes’ defense. Shortstop Alex Hernandez mishandled the ball, however, plating the tying run from third. Virginia (25-2, 9-2 ACC) would tack on RBI singles from Reed Gragnani and Joe McCarthy to take an early two-run lead.
Radziewski would collect himself to deliver another quality start, retiring a stretch of nine straight batters and 12 of 13 during the middle innings. The Miami, Fla., native, who earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for a 16-strikeout gem last time out against Virginia Tech, went six innings, striking out five batters while walking just two.
Virginia starter Scott Silverstein was up to the task. After allowing the RBI single to Kennedy, Silverstein (5-0) set down 15 of the next 16 batters, keeping the visitors off-balance and off the scoreboard. Ricky Eusebio’s seventh-inning single and a walk from Kennedy signaled the end of the afternoon for Silverstein. Reliever Whit Mayberry, entering the game in a tough jam, induced a groundout from pinch hitter Grant Heyman to maintain his team’s late lead.
The Cavaliers would tack on four insurance runs in the eighth to seal the series victory.
The two teams will return to Davenport Field Sunday for game three of the weekend set. First pitch for the contest has been moved from its original time of 1 p.m. to noon in anticipation of severe weather conditions.
