CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes wrapped up their six-game homestand in disappointing fashion Wednesday, dropping their midweek affair with visiting Florida Atlantic by a final score of 6-1.
After the teams traded runs in the first frame, FAU struck for five combined runs over the middle innings, including a three-run homerun from second baseman Robert Buckley in the sixth, to jump out to a decisive 6-1 lead.
With the Owls leading 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first, the Hurricanes (19-9) responded with a run of their own to knot the game at one. Christopher Barr, who was plunked by a Seth McGarry offering to open the game, eventually reached third on a wild pitch and flyout from junior Alex Hernandez. With two runners on and one out, Alex San Juan connected on an RBI single up the middle to tie the game.
After a rough first where he gave up three hits, Miami starter Javi Salas (2-3) settled down over his next three frames, holding the Owls scoreless to keep the game tied. The Coral Gables, Fla., native worked himself into a jam in the fifth, but induced a groundball to short that had the potential for a double play. Freshman shortstop Brandon Lopez was unable to convert, however, and a sacrifice fly from Mark Nelson and an RBI single from Tyler Rocklein saw the visitors gain a 3-1 advantage by inning’s end.
Miami struggled to generate much offense after the first, as Brandon Rhodes (3-1), who started in Miami’s win over FAU back on Feb. 20, relieved McGarry and pitched 1.2 scoreless innings.
The Hurricanes looked to have something building in the seventh, after back-to-back walks to Michael Broad and Garrett Kennedy and a single from Lopez loaded the bases. Reliever Kyle Miller induced a popout from Christopher Barr and a groundout from Hernandez to get out of the inning unharmed.
The Hurricanes next travel to No. 9 Virginia for a weekend series in Charlottesville, Va. First pitch for the series opener Friday at Davenport Field is set for 6 p.m.
