Hurricanes Face Must-Win at Virginia

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s soccer team will complete its 2009 regular season schedule against the Virginia Cavaliers, Sunday at 2 p.m. at Klockner Stadium.

Miami is coming off a heartbreaking loss to the No. 17 Virginia Tech Hokies on Friday night in Blacksburg, Va. With just seconds remaining in a1-1 game, VT’s Emily Jukich scored the game winner on a header in a scramble in the box. Junior Brittney Steinbruch scored the first goal of the game for the Hurricanes – her team-leading fourth of the season.
Steinbruch also leads UM in points with 11 as she also has three assists on the season.
A Look at the Cavaliers
Virginia, is coming off a big upset of No. 4 Florida State on Friday evening. Just one minute before halftime, Sinead Farrelly’s goal gave the Cavs a 1-0 lead that they would never relinquish.
Virginia’s Farrelly leads her team in scoring with six goals and six assists on the season. However, six other Cavaliers have multiple goals on the season, including a team-leading seven off the foot of Jess Rostedt.
Chantel Jones has started all 17 games in net for UVA and has recorded seven shutouts on the season, including the 1-0 win against FSU on Friday. She sports a 0.73 goals against average on the year.
The Series
Sunday’s meeting will be the seventh between the two programs – dating back to 2004 season. The Cavaliers hold a 4-1-1 all-time lead in the series. Last season, Virginia – then the 14th ranked team in the nation defeated Miami 2-0 in Coral Gables.

The Hurricanes face a must-win situation in Charlottesville. Miami currently sits in ninth place in the ACC standings, just one point behind Virginia. Only eight squads move on to the ACC Tournament next week in Cary. N.C. A win will give the `Canes 13 points and at least a No. 8 seed in the tournament.
