Hurricane soccer breezes past Stetson, 3-1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The inauguralUniversity of Miami women’ssoccer team defeated Stetson, 3-1, Wednesday at Gulliver Academy.Thewin improved the Hurricanes to 11-6-1, while the Hatters fell to 4-14.

Freshman striker JenniferSanchez (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/MASTAcademy) scored two goals to lead the Hurricane offensive charge.Sanchez opened the scoring with a goal off a free kick served by juniordefender Lene Ostergard Hansen at the 35:32 mark. Seventeen secondsinto the second half, Sanchez scored again off an assist by sophomorestriker Katherine Sund.

Sanchez leads the ‘Caneswith 11 goals, 27 points and threemulti-goal games. Her second goal marked the second time thisseasonthat a Hurricane has scored a goal within the first 20 seconds of ahalf. Earlier this season, sophomore striker Kazmeen Moolchanscored 20seconds into UM’s 2-1 win over Kansas on September 6.

Freshman striker BrookePosner scored the game-winning goal atthe 40:32 mark on a through pass by center midfielder Mehryn Corrigan.Posner blasted the ball past Stetson goalkeeper Genevieve Roy to thegoal’s far post. Posner has scored seven goals this season, allas areserve.

Miami won the game despitebeing without junior centermidfielder Nina Wathne who was serving a one-game suspension due toared card received in Miami’s 2-1 win over Iowa last Saturday.Corriganfilled in for Wathne at the center midfield position.

Stetson scored its lonegoal in the 62nd minute, a goal by LisaOverton assisted by Kristy Porcelli.

The Hurricanes concludetheir inaugural season with a home matchagainst crosstown rival Florida International on Saturday, November7 at2:00 p.m. at Gulliver Academy (12595 Red Road).
