Canes Earn 100th Victory in BankUnited Center

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) –Durand Scott scored 16 points to lead Miami to an 83-75 victory over Massachusetts on Saturday.

Scott scored all of his points on free throws as he finished 0-for-6 from the field but made 16-of-18 free throw attempts. Scott also had six assists and six rebounds.

The Hurricanes (5-2) overcame a Minutemen comeback and clinched the win on Kenny Kadji’s slam dunk with 24 seconds remaining for an 81-74 lead.

Massachusetts had three attempts to cut a 79-74 deficit under two minutes but Sean Carter missed two free throws, Chaz Williams’ running jumper fell off the rim and Kadji blocked Carter’s short field goal attempt with 1:31 left.

Malcolm Grant scored 15 points and Shane Larkin finished with 14 points for the Hurricanes.

Williams scored 22 points to lead the Minutemen (6-3).
Williams converted four free throws and Raphiael Putney scored two free throws as The Minutemen rallied from a 73-64 deficit and cut the Miami lead to 73-70 with 4:29 left.

Williams’ jumper with 2:36 left again cut the Miami lead to 77-74. Scott converted two free throws with 2:01 left and pushed the Hurricanes’ advantage to 79-74.

Massachusetts rallied from its second 11-point deficit early in the second half with seven unanswered points. Carter’s dunk with 11:59 remaining capped the run and got the Minutemen within 50-46.

Grant and Trey McKinney Jones scored five points each and Scott converted 5-of-6 free throws as Miami outscored Massachusetts, 17-1, and took the lead for good during a 7:56 stretch late in the first half. Grant’s corner 3-pointer with 1:45 remaining capped the run and gave the Hurricanes a 39-26 lead.

The Minutemen’s field goal scoring drought ended on Carter’s dunk with 1:31 remaining. Massachusetts missed five field goal attempts and committed three turnovers during the Hurricanes’ spurt.

Jesse Morgan’s jumper with 39 seconds remaining cut Miami’s lead to 41-31 at halftime.

The Hurricanes twice had seven-point leads in the opening four minutes of the first half but the Minutemen kept the deficit within two possessions.

Williams’ second of consecutive 3-pointers gave Massachusetts a 25-22 lead with 8:41 left.

– Senior Malcolm Grant has scored double digits in all seven games, the only Hurricane to notch at least 10 points in each game.

Today’s game was the first career start for Shane Larkin as well as Raphael Akpejiori.

Trey McKinney Jones has started back-to-back games and has been the team’s leading rebounder (or tied) in the past three games.

Miami is now 4-0 after leading at halftime this year and is now 5-0 after leading with 2:00 left this year.

The game against UMass was Shane Larkin’s second straight game with double digit points.

Malcolm Grant has made a three-pointer in 30 straight games dating back to the Dec 30, 2009 outing against Pepperdine tying him at third all-time with Jack McClinton’s 2007-08 mark of 30.

Miami is now 3-0 all-time against UMass.

Miami halted a two-game losing streak with the victory against UMass.

The Hurricanes are 5-0 in the BankUnited Center this season after going 13-4 at home in 2010-11. UM has compiled an 86-31 record at home since joining the ACC for the 2004-05 season and are 100-44 overall at the arena.

Hurricanes have made a three-point basket in 318 straight games and have made at least one trey in 775 of 778 since the NCAA adopted the three-point shot in 1986.

The Hurricanes have won 27 consecutive non-conference games at the BankUnited and have defeated 42 of their last 45 non-conference opponents at home. Miami’s last non-conference home loss came at the hands of Ohio State, 73-68 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec, 2, 2008.

Miami has held 633 of its last 634 opponents to less than 100 points. UNC was the last team to score 100+. Defeating UM 105-63 on Jan. 31, 2007.
