Marcelo Albir should have an important leadership role on the field and in the dugout as one of three Hurricane seniors on the UM pitching staff … pitches with a lot of movement and possesses a good changeup … has steadily improved … pitched well in the Virginia Valley League in the summer of 2005, compiling a 5-1 record and a 2.43 ERA for the Luray Wranglers after sitting out the 2005 season at Miami … saw limited action early on in the 2004 season … emerged late in the Hurricanes’ run to the College World Series as a reliable right-handed in the bullpen … seven of nine appearance came in the final month of the season with three appearances in the postseason … did not allow an earned run in his first seven appearances in 2004 … posted a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings of work while striking out 13 and walking five … started one game as a freshman against South Florida … made 19 appearances ranked fifth on the team … finished the season with 1-2 record and an 8.76 ERA … pitched 24.2 innings, including 22.1 innings in relief … made his collegiate debut against Campbell on Feb. 6, 2003, striking out the side.
Albir did not record a decision in 2004, but posted an impressive 2.25 ERA … pitched 12 innings over nine appearances … made seven of his nine appearances over the final month of the season as he stepped into Miami’s primary right-handed setup role … walked five and struck out 13 … averaged 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings … through the first seven appearances did not allow a run and just nine hits … pitched one inning allowing one hit while striking out two in a relief appearance vs. LaSalle on Feb. 28 … threw two shutout innings and struck out two vs. Illinois-Chicago on March 21 … added one shutout inning striking out two vs. North Carolina on May 14 … went 1.2 innings against Florida Atlantic on May 19 with one walk and one strikeout … struck out one batter in one-third of an inning against Long Beach State on May 29. 2004 NCAA Coral Gables Regional: Albir struck out two batters in two innings of work in Game 4 of the regional against Florida Atlantic. 2004 NCAA Coral Gables Super Regional: Albir saw relief duty in the Hurricanes 8-7 win over Florida on June 12, allowing four hits, a season-high three runs (all earned), one walk with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings … the three runs were the first and only he allowed all season. 2004 College World Series: Albir threw 1.1 innings of solid relief on June 21 against Cal State Fullerton in the CWS … the Titans managed only one hits as Albir struck out one.
The right-handed Albir made 19 appearances out of the Hurricanes’ bullpen … went 1-2 with a 8.76 ERA … made the first start of his career against South Florida on March 12, lasting 2.1 innings and allowing two runs on six hits and two walks … made his first career appearance on Feb. 6 against Campbell, pitching one inning with three strikeouts … pitched 2.1 innings of relief against Campbell and Feb. 8, giving up one hit while striking out two … allowed his first earned run against The Citadel on Feb. 28 … earned his first career win on March 21 against Boston College with 1.2 innings of relief … suffered his first loss against Florida Atlantic on April 2, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks … pitched two innings against Florida State on April 27. 2003 NCAA Coral Gables Regional: Albir threw two innings against Florida on June 1, allowing four hits and four runs … Albir did not see action in the Super Regionals or College World Series.
