Jon McLean joined the Hurricanes at the start of the 2005 spring semester from Miami-Dade Community College … senior sidearm reliever who has developed a changeup to help get left-handers out … came on strong at the end of his junior season and teamed up with Andrew Lane to serve as Chris Perez’s primary setup men

Junior (2005)
Sidewinder who struggled early in the season out of the bullpen with inconsistency but came on strong late in the season … finished the season 1-0 with a 3.04 ERA and led the team in opponent batting average (.202) … totaled 10.0 innings of relief in his last 11 appearances, giving up two earned runs … struck out a total of 10 batters in his last 11 appearances and had the second-highest strikeouts per nine innings ratio on the team with 25 Ks in 23.2 innings pitched. Coral Gables Regional (6/3): Pitched 2.0 innings of scoreless relief in the Regional opener against Virginia Commonwealth, giving up one hit. ACC Tournament (5/25-26): Pitched a total of 1.0 innings of relief in two appearances. At Clemson (5/21): Struck out the only batter he faced. At Jacksonville (5/70: Struck out the side in one inning of work. Vs Maryland (4/30): Gave up one unearned run in 2.0 innings of work with two strikeouts. Vs. Florida State (4/24): Pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up one run. At Virginia Tech (4/8): Walked one batter and gave up a hit. Vs. Georgia Tech (3/26): Gave up one run on one hit with a strikeout and a walk. At FIU (3/23): Pitched one inning with a strikeout. At Wake Forest (3/19): Threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Vs. Rutgers (3/16): Gave up two earned runs on a double. Vs. Duke (3/12-13): Saw action in two games and totaled 1.1 innings without a run. Vs. North Carolina State (3/4, 6): Threw in both Miami wins for a total of 3.1 innings with four strikeouts. Vs. George Washington (2/26): Gave up two runs in a third of an inning. At Florida (2/18-19): Surrendered a solo home run and walked two. Vs. McLean won the 2004 Fireman Award for his performance at Miami-Dade Community College under the guidance of head coach Steve Hertz. Sophomore (2004): McLean posted a 4-0 record with five saves and 40 strikeouts … was named the Miami-Dade Pitcher of the Year with a 0.90 ERA … helped his team to a third-place finish in conference play. Freshman (2003): Went 3-1 with a 3.25 ERA … struck out 17 batters.

Palmetto
McLean starred as both a pitcher and first baseman at Palmetto High School where he was coached by Carlos Armas. Senior (2002): McLean posted a 3-1 record with a 3.50 ERA and one save … struck out 22 opposing hitters … batted .390 with three home runs and 27 RBI … named the team MVP for his performance … selected the Miami Herald Third-Team All-Dade County team. Junior (2001): Earned honorable mention honors from the Miami Herald after hitting .330 with one home run and 21 RBI … was honored for his defensive play with a Gold Glove award from Palmetto. Sophomore (2000): Hit .391 with one home run and 33 RBI … earned honorable mention All-Dade County honors from the Miami Herald … his defensive play earned him a Gold Glove award. Freshman (1999): Named the team’s Rookie of the Year after hitting .350.

Son of Bart and Dori McLean … has two sisters, Tiffany and Stephanie … enjoys fishing, shooting pool and spear fishing … plays the guitar … sister Stephanie graduated from the University of Miami in 2004 … majoring in liberal arts.
