Miami’s ACC Tournament Run Ends in Quarterfinals
CARY, N.C. – The fifth-seeded University of Miami women’s tennis team (14-7, 8-4 ACC) fell, 4-2, to the fifth-seeded Duke Blue Devils (18-6, 10-2 ACC) in the ACC Championship quarterfinals on Friday evening at the Cary Tennis Park.
The doubles point was a battle from start to finish, ultimately going to the Hurricanes. Court three’s Daria Volosova and Maria Vargas fell early, 6-2, to Liv Hovde and Aspen Schuman.
Miami then earned the 6-4 win over No. 71 Claire An and Eleana Yu on court two, before Raquel Gonzalez and Dominika Podhajecka rallied to clinch the point, 7-6 (3), against Shavit Kimchi and Irina Balus at the top court.
Duke controlled the start of singles, taking three straight to go up. No. 14 Balus took the top court over No. 42 Gonzalez, 6-4, 6-0, Kimchi earned the 6-2, 6-2 win over Volosova and No. 117 Hovde notched the 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 99 Ogunwale.
Scilipoti then tallied a point for Miami after a strong 6-4, 6-3 win against An. Down to the last two courts, Duke’s No. 48 Schuman clinched it with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 on court two, while No. 112 Podhajecka was tied 6-4, 3-6, 1-1 with No. 124 Yu when the match was abandoned.
Miami will await its postseason fate at the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, April 27.
