W. Tennis Advances to ACC Quarterfinals

CARY, N.C. – The fifth-seeded University of Miami women’s tennis team (14-6, 8-4 ACC) advanced to the quarterfinals after a 4-3 victory over the 12th-seeded Wake Forest Demon Deacons (13-13, 4-8 ACC) on Thursday evening at the Cary Tennis Park.

The Hurricanes came out strong and swept all three courts in doubles. Court two’s Sofia Rocchetti and Sebastianna Scilipoti earned the 6-4 win over Sankavi Gownder and Evie Oxford, before Raquel Gonzalez and Dominika Podhajecka took down No. 66 Nevena Carton and Kady Tannenbaum to clinch it.

As court three played out, Jaquelyn Ogunwale and Daria Volosova secured the sweep with a 7-6 (2) win over Krystal Blanch and Aubrey Nisbet.

Scilipoti dominated on court four, 6-1, 6-0, over Heidi Bulger, before Wake Forest’s Oxford took down No. 99 Ogunwale, 6-4, 6-4, on court three. No. 63 Rocchetti then put the Hurricanes within one with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Blanch, while Volosova fell 5-7, 5-7, to Gownder on court five.

Down to the final two courts, the Demon Deacons earned a win on court six from Tannenbaum over No. 112 Podhajecka, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3, but the Hurricanes prevailed at the top court with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win from No. 42 Gonzalez over No. 104 Carton.

The Hurricanes will face fourth-seeded Duke in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
