Canali Named ACC Offensive Player of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After a sensational week in which she helped lead the University of Miami soccer team to back-to-back victories over Missouri and FIU, Giovana Canali has been named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
The award for Canali marks just the second time in program history that a freshman has been named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week.
Canali was exceptional for the Hurricanes this past week, helping Miami earn a 2-1 victory over Missouri on Thursday, before scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over FIU on Sunday.
Canali recorded four shots, two of which were on target, and the freshman scored two goals throughout the week.
In the Canes’ 2-1 victory over Missouri, Canali opened the scoring in the match, as she found the back of the net with a perfectly placed left-footed strike in the 38th minute, giving Miami a lead that they would never relinquish. The Canes went on to earn a 2-1 victory over the Tigers.
In Miami’s 1-0 victory over FIU on Sunday, Canali found the back of the net with a stellar finish in the 68th minute, proving to be the game-winning goal in the match.
Canali has had a phenomenal start to her collegiate career, as she has scored a team-high three goals in five games this season.
Miami is set to close out the non-conference portion of their schedule this Thursday at Cobb Stadium against Southeastern Louisiana, with the match scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
