Miami Moves Up to No. 45 in ITA Team Rankings

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Graduate student Dan Martin ascended 28 spots to No. 24 in this week’s ITA singles rankings, as announced Tuesday morning. As a team, Miami (14-9, 5-7 ACC) checks in at No. 45 in the team rankings, two spots higher than the previous week.

Martin’s 28-spot leap comes after he took down a pair of ranked opponents over the weekend. The Laval, Quebec, native opened the final weekend of the regular season with a 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) victory over No. 14 Garrett Johns of Duke.

He followed that with a decisive 6-1, 6-4, defeat of North Carolina’s No. 45 Brian Cernoch for his sixth ranked singles victory of the season.

Sophomore Martin Katz retained a top-100 singles position, moving to No. 99 in the rankings.

Two of Miami’s doubles pairs appeared in the ITA doubles rankings this week – fifth-year senior Juan Martin Jalif and freshman Martin Vergara Del Puerto at No. 69 and fifth-year senior Franco Aubone and Vergara Del Puerto at No. 86.

The Hurricanes have appeared in the ITA top-60 for 12 straight weeks, ascending as high as No. 42 this season.

Twelve of the 13 ACC teams are ranked in the top 75, including seven in the top 40, six in the top 25 and three in the top 15. Miami is featured alongside eighth-ranked Virginia, No. 12 Duke, No. 14 North Carolina, No. 18 Florida State, No. 20 Wake Forest, No. 23 NC State, No. 36 Louisville, No. 58 Notre Dame, No. 64 Clemson, No. 65 Georgia Tech and No. 75 Virginia Tech.

The Hurricanes open play at the ACC Championships on Thursday when they take on ninth-seeded Georgia Tech at 3:30 p.m. at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
