Zamora Picked in Second Round by Brewers

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami shortstop Freddy Zamora was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 53rd overall pick of the 2020 MLB Draft.

Zamora, who was selected by the Brewers with the 16th pick in the second round, was one of the top shortstops in college baseball. Despite missing the 2020 campaign due to injury, Zamora is a five-tool prospect who can do it all on a baseball field.

In 2019, the Miami native started 50 games at shortstop for the Hurricanes, batting .296 with 12 doubles, six homers and 46 RBI. Zamora posted 17 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI performances as a sophomore a year ago and helped Miami return to the NCAA tournament for the 46th time in program history.

Zamora impressed in his collegiate debut season, earning 2018 Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball and ACC All-Freshman accolades after batting .303 with team-high totals in at-bats (211), hits (64), doubles (12), triples (four), walks (24) and total bases (87). He also ranked second with 20 steals (20-for-24) and 32 runs scored.

Before the 2020 season, Zamora was ranked the No. 13 prospect in the ACC by D1 Baseball and the No. 48 player in college baseball by Baseball America.

Zamora started 104 games in his Miami career, batting .300 with 24 doubles, four triples, seven homers and 74 RBI over 410 at-bats. The 6-foot-1 infielder scored 75 runs, slugged .429 and walked 55 times, while getting on base at a .391 clip and stealing 33 bases.

Zamora is the third Hurricane selected in the 2020 MLB Draft. Sophomore right-hander Slade Cecconi was taken with the 33rd overall pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks, while junior right-hander Chris McMahon went in the second round to the Colorado Rockies.
