CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the fourth year in a row, Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team is an ITA All-American in singles, as announced Tuesday morning.
The senior is the fifth player in Miami’s elite program history to receive at least four ITA All-America distinctions, joining Ronni Reis (eight), Lise Gregory (seven), Laura Vallverdu (five) and Bianca Eichkorn (four).
In addition, Perez-Somarriba is just the third Hurricane to garner the accolade four times in singles, alongside Reis and Vallverdu.
With the 2020 spring season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, just 20 singles players and 10 doubles pairs earned ITA All-America status. The ACC led the way with 17 honorees on the list, which can be found HERE, with the individuals hailing from eight schools.
This is the 67th ITA All-America honor for a Hurricane, including the 35th in singles. In head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews‘ 19 years at the helm, Miami has amassed 33 total recognitions, 21 of which have come in singles. Additionally, at least one Hurricane has now earned the plaudit in 16 of the past 17 seasons.
Perez-Somarriba went 25-3 in singles in 2019-20, finishing one shy of the national lead in victories. She became the first Hurricane to lead the team in singles wins four years in a row and tallied an 11-3 mark against ranked foes.
The Madrid native, who broke the Miami career wins record in January and now has 141 in her tenure, sported a top-three for the entire season and peaked at first overall in February.
Perez-Somarriba announced recently that she will utilize the NCAA-approved extra year for spring sport student-athletes and will return to Miami next season.
