Yaroshuk-Tews Inks Pfennig for 2020-21

CORAL GABLES, Fla.  University of Miami head women’s tennis coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews announced Wednesday the signing of Isabella Pfennig to a National Letter of Intent.

The 5-foot-3 right-hander will join the Hurricanes in the offseason and begin competing with the team during the upcoming 2020-21 campaign.

“Isabella possesses the qualities we believe are essential to play at this level,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We are excited to welcome both her and her wonderful family to the University of Miami. I’m confident her career at UM will be a successful and fulfilling one.”

A native of Gauting, Germany, just outside Munich, Pfennig comes to Miami after graduating from Otto-von-TaubeGymnasium in her hometown.

Pfennig was the top-ranked U18 player in Germany and, in March 2020, checked in at No. 41 in the country’s senior rankings. Internationally, she peaked at No. 1,012 in the WTA rankings on Sept. 24, 2018, and at No. 556 on the ITF Juniors list on June 17, 2019, despite limited competitions at the latter level.

The owner of four German National Junior Championship crowns, Pfennig claimed the U16 singles title in 2017 without dropping a set and won the U14 singles trophy in 2015. She also earned the U18 doubles title in 2018 and the U16 doubles championship in 2016.

Pfennig represented her nation at the 2017 U16 European Team Summer Cups in Rivne, Ukraine, and at the same event in 2016 at the U14 level in Izmir, Turkey. She also competed for Germany at the 2018 European Championship Tournaments in Klosters, Switzerland, and in the same tournament in 2017 in Moscow, advancing to the quarterfinals both times.

In June 2019, Pfennig reached the quarterfinals of an IFT Grade 1 singles event in Offenbach, Germany, defeating Alexandra Yepifanova, a finalist at the US Open Junior Championships.

The newest member of the Hurricanes, Pfennig committed to Miami over offers from Georgia Tech, USC and Yale
