Sundstrand Signs NLI With Hurricanes

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Head swimming coach Andy Kershaw Wednesday announced the signing of swimmer Emma Sundstrand to a National Letter of Intent.

Sundstrand, a native of Rönninge, Sweden, will join the Hurricanes as a freshman for the 2020-21 season.

“We’re excited to add Emma to next year’s team. I think, first and foremost, she’s the right person for the team,” Kershaw said. “She’s going to be a good teammate and a good addition to the culture that we’re building. That, I think, was one of the big driving factors.”

Sundstrand, who was a member of the Swedish junior national team at both the European Junior Championships and the Nordic Junior Championships, is expected to make an immediate impact for the Hurricanes in the lanes.

“She’s a medley swimmer, but her breaststroke has really been coming on,” Kershaw said. “She’s a versatile swimmer who can step in and fill some of our breaststroke needs, but also supplement us in other strokes, too.”

Sundstrand, who was a bronze medalist at the Swedish national championships in the 50-yard breaststroke, competed for Södertälje Simsällskap while at Rönninge Skola.

“We’ve had a long run of successful Swedish swimmers here, and we haven’t had one since Julia Schippert left, so I’m excited to be able to continue that tradition here at The U,” Kershaw said.
