Miami Rises 10 Spots in Latest Poll
CORAL GABLES, Fla. –In the latest computer-generated edition of the 2020 Oracle/ITA national rankings list, the University of Miami men’s tennis team jumped up 10 spots and checks in at No. 21 in the country, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the ITA.
The leap up the leaderboard was the third largest rise of the week among current top-30 teams, with Pepperdine rising 16 to No. 19 and UCF moving up 11 to No. 22.
Following a two-week hiatus, the Hurricanes didn’t skip a beat on Sunday extending their win streak to six matches and securing their eighth shutout of the year, defeating then-No. 25 Florida State 4-0.
Miami (10-2, 3-0 ACC) has now opened conference play with three straight wins for the second consecutive season, the first time it has begun play undefeated through three matches in back-to-back years since joining the ACC prior to the 2004-05 campaign.
In addition, the Canes’ top-25 triumph was their second over the Seminoles in as many seasons, the first time Miami has topped its in-state rival in back-to-back years since winning five straight from 1995-2001.
Overall, Miami is one of eight ACC teams in the rankings this week, including second-ranked North Carolina, sixth-ranked NC State, No. 13 Wake Forest, No. 28 Florida State, No. 32 Duke, No. 35 Virginia and No. 44 Georgia Tech.
The Hurricanes will return to action on Friday at 3 p.m. for a top-25 ACC showdown, squaring off with the Tar Heels at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Miami will then welcome the Blue Devils to Coral Gables on Sunday at 2 p.m., which will mark Miami’s fifth consecutive match against a top-50 opponent.
