Achong, Cadar Earn Wins to Open Milwaukee Tennis Classic

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – Both competitors from the University of Miami women’s tennis team notched victories Friday at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on the first day of the 2019-20 season.
Sophomore Daevenia Achong and freshman Selma Cadar both logged straight-set decisions at the Milwaukee Country Club to begin the fall on a high note.
“Obviously, I’m just happy that they advanced,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “[It was the] first collegiate match for Selma, always nice to get that one under your belt.”
Seeded second in the doubles draw, Achong and Cadar received a bye through the opening round and will begin play together Saturday against Radka Buzkova and Martina Kudelova of Florida Atlantic.
Ranked No. 80 and seeded fifth in the draw, Achong started her 2019-20 singles slate in impressive fashion. The Geleen, Netherlands, native did not drop a single game in the opening set and earned a dominant 6-2, 6-0 triumph against Purdue’s Ena Babic.
Up next for Achong is a matchup with Vanessa Strong of Northwestern Saturday in the second round of the main draw.
Cadar also logged a straight-set win in not just her first match of the season, but of her collegiate career.
The Bucharest, Romania, native dropped four of the first six games before taking 11 of the final 15 to defeat Christine Gouws of Eastern Illinois, 7-5, 6-3. She will now face top-seeded Csilla Fodor of Purdue Saturday.
“She’s got a big one tomorrow with the number one seed,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “It should be fun.”
