Trio of Hurricanes Advance to Quarterfinals
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team returned to action on Saturday, with six Canes competing at the Georgia Tech Invitational,
Playing at the Ken Byers Tennis complex, junior Benjamin Hannestad and sophomore Tatsuki Shimamoto led the charge for Miami with the lone singles victories and advanced to Sunday’s quarterfinal matches.
Facing Max Freeman of Vanderbilt, Hannestad locked up a 6-1, 6-4 triumph and will square off against Marcus McDaniel of Georgia Tech Sunday at 8 a.m.
Squaring off against Vanderbilt’s Adam Sraberg, Shimamoto earned a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set victory. The sophomore will take on Georgia’s Alex Phillips at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
Earning a first round bye, senior Stephen Madonia will battle Auburn’s Diego Chavarria at 8 a.m. on Sunday in the quarterfinals.
Also competing in singles, Franco Aubone came up short against Tennessee’s Giles Hussey, 6-7, 1-6, while Dane Dunlap fell against South Carolina’s Beau Pelletier, 3-6, 4-6.
Facing Mississippi State’s Florian Broska, junior William Grattan-Smith dropped a back-and-forth battle, 6-7, 6-0, 5-7, while Pablo Aycart Joya lost in three sets against Georgia’s Sam Dromsky, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6.
