Miami Opens Play at ITA All-American Championships
TULSA, Okla. – A pair of University of Miami men’s tennis student-athletes opened play at the 2019 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships on Monday.
“We have a great opportunity to bounce back tomorrow and to keep actively working on the things we have been working on this fall,” first-year assistant coach Beck Pennington said. “I’m excited to see how the guys will respond tomorrow.”
Competing in qualifiers at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus, junior Bojan Jankulovski got off to a fast start against No. 124 Loic Cloes of South Alabama, claiming the opening set 6-1. However, the Jaguar was able to complete the comeback, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Making his debut at the ITA All-American Championships, sophomore Francisco Bastias opened with a 6-4 opening set victory over No. 88 Jake Sands of USC. Although it was not enough to take down the Trojan, who stole the match, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Both Hurricanes will return to action Tuesday for consolation competition. Jankulovski will square off against Tulsa’s Boriss Kamdem at 11 a.m. ET, while Bastias takes on South Alabama’s Clement Marzol at 2:30 p.m.
