Quintet of Hurricanes Reach Sunday’s Title Matches
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Split between a pair of fall tournaments, the Farnsworth Ivy-Plus in Princeton, N.J., and the Gamecock Fall Invitational in Columbia, S.C., the University of Miami men’s tennis team saw a great showing during the second day of action.
Opening Saturday morning with a pair of doubles rounds, redshirt senior Dane Dunlap and junior Bojan Jankulovski captured a pair of victories over ACC foes to advance to Sunday’s championship match in the Palmetto State.
In the quarterfinals, the duo topped Wake Forest’s Siddhant Banthia and Matthew Thomson, 8-2, before earning a hard-fought victory over Florida State’s Angus Bradshaw and Zdenek Derkas, 8-7 (10-3).
The upperclassmen will square off against South Carolina’s Phillip Jordan and Connor Thomson Sunday at 8 a.m.
In the Garnet Doubles main draw, sophomore teammates Franco Aubone and Francisco Bastias opened the morning with an 8-5 victory over Auburn’s Tyler Stice and Thomas Wright.
In the semifinals, the Argentinian duo defeated SMU’s Huntley Allen and Jordi Redelijk, 8-3. The duo will compete for the championship Sunday at 8 a.m. against Texas’ Yuya Ito and Siem Woldeab.
The fifth Cane set to compete in a championship match on Sunday, No. 21 Adria Soriano Barrera topped No. 46 Filip Malbasic of Arizona, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, in Princeton, N.J., sophomore Tatsuki Shimamoto collected a singles victory over William & Mary’s Oren Vasser, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6).
Facing Texas’ Jacob Bullard, senior Stephen Madonia earned a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4) victory, while junior William Grattan-Smith topped Yale’s Dylan King, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 1-0 (10-5).
