Perez-Somarriba, Achong/Roldan Ascend in ITA Rankings
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team moved up one spot and is now the top singles player in the Oracle/ITA rankings, as announced Wednesday afternoon.
The junior was ranked second nationally in each of the last six releases and has now passed Georgia’s Katarina Jokic by 0.07 points for the highest spot.
As was the case with her top-two position, she is the first Hurricane ranked atop the list since Audra Cohen finished first in 2007. Perez-Somarriba recently repeated as ACC Player of the Year, becoming the eighth player in ACC history to do so.
Along with Perez-Somarriba moving up a spot on the singles list, Miami’s ranked doubles duo of freshman Daevenia Achong and senior Daniella Roldan also continued to move upwards.
They are now ranked No. 13 in the country, their best spot of the season and again the top position by a Miami duo since 2016. Achong and Roldan were announced Tuesday night as NCAA Doubles Championship selections.
In addition, Miami held steady at No 19 in the country after not competing last week in advance of the NCAA Team Championship.
The Hurricanes are one of six ACC teams in the top 25, alongside top-ranked North Carolina, fifth-ranked Duke, No. 11 Florida State, No. 12 NC State, No. 21 Virginia and No. 22 Wake Forest. Syracuse comes in at No. 31, while Georgia Tech is No. 41, Boston College is No. 42 and Notre Dame is No. 46, giving the ACC 11 ranked teams in total.
Miami resumes play Friday at 3 p.m. ET when it takes on No. 33 Washington State in Stillwater, Okla., in the opening round of the NCAA Team Championship.
