W. Tennis Meets No. 9 NC State in ACC Quarters
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Following a 4-1 victory over No. 13-seed Virginia Tech Thursday in its ACC Championship opener, the fifth-seeded University of Miami women’s tennis team will be back in action Friday against fourth-seeded NC State.
No. 21 Miami (17-6, 9-5 ACC) is set to square off with the ninth-ranked Wolfpack Friday at 3 p.m. at Cary Tennis Park.
The match was pushed back 30 minutes from its original scheduled start time and moved indoors due to impending inclement weather. Live video of the contest can be found HERE and live stats will be available HERE.
The victor of Friday’s affair will head to the ACC Championship semifinals, set for Saturday at 2 p.m., against either top-seeded and second-ranked North Carolina or ninth-seeded and No. 30-ranked Syracuse.
Miami sports a 16-1 all-time mark against NC State, but the teams have never met at a neutral site or in postseason action. The Hurricanes’ lone in the series defeat came this season, as the Wolfpack recorded a 6-1 home decision on March 22.
The Hurricanes have an 18-13 all-time record in ACC Championship competition, including 17-11 ledger in Cary. Miami has made the quarterfinals in all 15 of its appearances, reaching the semifinals 10 times, including each of the past four years. Additionally, it has advanced to the final on six occasions and won the title in 2013.
Miami has one ranked singles player, junior Estela Perez-Somarriba, who comes in at second nationally. She is 21-1 in dual match play this season, with the lone defeat a 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 3-6 setback against NC State’s Anna Rogers.
The Hurricanes also have one ranked doubles pair, with freshman Daevenia Achong and senior Daniella Roldan checking in at a season-best No. 16 nationally.
NC State is 22-5 (11-3 ACC) this year, already good for its most wins in a season in program history. The Wolfpack has two ranked singles players, with Rogers placing No. 10 in the country and Alana Smith holding the No. 68 spot.
Rogers and Smith also form the team’s lone ranked doubles duo, coming in at No. 10 on the Oracle/ITA list.
