Achong Earns Fourth ACC Freshman of the Week Honor
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Daevenia Achong of the University of Miami women’s tennis team is yet again the ACC Freshman of the Week, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the conference office.
The Geleen, Netherlands, native received her fourth such distinction of 2019, splitting the season’s final award with NC State’s Alana Smith. She also garnered the recognition Jan. 22, Jan. 29 and April 2, taking home ACC Player of the Week on two of those occasions, as well.
Achong posted a 4-0 mark across singles and doubles play last week, helping lead Miami (16-6, 9-5 ACC) to a 7-0 victory over Louisville and a 6-1 triumph over then-No. 19 Virginia. The decisions helped the Hurricanes move from No. 25 to No. 21 in the rankings.
In Thursday’s win against the Cardinals, Achong opened the day by logging a 6-4 result at the top doubles spot. Playing alongside senior Daniella Roldan, the pair, then ranked No. 20 and now at No. 16, defeated Dina Chaika and Raven Neely. She followed that with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 decision against Sena Suswam in singles action.
Achong clinched both the doubles point and the overall match versus the Cavaliers, earning the first point with Roldan by topping then-No. 68 Chloe Gullickson and Amber O’Dell, 6-4. In singles, she cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Vivian Glozman.
Up next for Achong and the Hurricanes is the ACC Championship in Cary, N.C., where fifth-seeded Miami begins play Thursday at 2:30 p.m. against either No. 12-seed Clemson or No. 13-seed Virginia Tech.
