Men’s Tennis Caps Regular Season at Wake Forest
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team will play its final match of the regular season Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem, N.C.
No. 25 Miami (16-8, 7-4 ACC) will battle the defending national champion, fourth-ranked Wake Forest, at 1 p.m. at the WF Tennis Complex.
The match will be streamed live HERE, with live stats accessible HERE.
In a series that dates back to 1973, Miami holds a 13-11 advantage over Wake Forest. Last season, the then-topped-ranked Demon Deacons edged the Hurricanes, 4-3, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Getting off to a fast start in doubles, Miami claimed the advantageous point after sophomores Pablo Aycart and Tatsuki Shimamoto took care of business on court 3, 6-3, before redshirt junior Dane Dunlap and sophomore Bojan Jankulovski won a tiebreaker on court 2, 7-6 (7-3).
In singles, Jankulovski and sophomore Adria Soriano Barrera earned a pair of straight-set victories to tie the contest at three. However, in the lone match to go three sets, Dunlap came up short against the eventual 2018 NCAA Singles Championship runner-up, Bar Botzer, 5-7, 6-4, 4-6.
This season, the Hurricanes are led by a pair of sophomores featured on the national singles list, with Soriano Barrera coming in at No. 55 and Jankulovski ranked No. 81.
Under the direction of eighth-year head coach Tony Bresky, Wake Forest (25-3, 11-0) secured the 2019 ACC regular season title and top-seed at the ACC Championship following Friday’s 4-0 triumph over No. 29 Florida State.
WF boasts a quartet of players on the ITA singles list in third-ranked Petros Chrysochos, No. 19 Borna Gojo, No. 43 Botzer and No. 100 Melios Efstathiou. In doubles, Chrysochos and Botzer form the nation’s No. 34 duo, Gojo and Alan Gadjiev rank No. 62 and Gadgiev and Julian Zlobinsky form the No. 84 tandem.
Following the match, the Hurricanes will return to action at 9 a.m. on Thursday in the opening round of the ACC Championship in Greensboro, N.C. As the fifth-seed, Miami will square off against the winner of Wednesday’s qualifier match between 12th-seeded Clemson and 13th-seeded Boston College.
